Friends and Neighbors: A Kentucky Derby Party at the Library

Kentucky Derby Party

By Enola Gay Mathews

Although I’m new to Winnsboro life and unfamiliar with The Standard Club, I made more new friends when I attended the Kentucky Derby Party at Winnsboro’s Gilbreath Memorial Library on May 4. The Standard Club carries quite a proud history with over 110 years of providing books and support for our library. Starting ‘way back when’ in the Andrew Carnegie Library Days, then during a period when private homes provided library space, and in 1987 when the Gilbreath Memorial Library opened, Standard Club volunteers have continued their mission as advocates for literacy and community reading programs.

The club’s annual fundraising event is known for delightful dress-up themes, and this year celebrated the Run for the Roses. Club members decked out the main room with photos and memorabilia from the horse racing world, and wonderful savories and aperitifs were shared with attendees. A donation basket at the welcome desk yielded more funding for the local library.
